RETRO HANDHELD CONSOLE / ESP32 APPLICATION
ESP32 S3 Handheld Gaming Console
Multi-platform retro handheld gaming console for ESP32-S3 with 15 emulation engines, procedural BMO companion OS, and custom hardware.

About this project
About this project
A soldered perfboard build around an ESP32-S3-N16R8 drives a 240×320 ST7789 over 80 MHz SPI from a dedicated display core, with PSRAM holding double buffers. Emulation cores for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, NES, Sega Master System and Game Gear, plus DOOM, launch from a carousel; a library index cuts enumerating 2,000 ROMs from about 3.5 s to under 15 ms, and 64×64 box art streams from microSD. Two ROMs are baked into flash so the console runs without a card. The BMO mascot is a procedural signed distance field with spring physics and 16 expressions. Arduino CLI compiles the BmoGameboy sketch against core 3.3.11 with FlashMode=qio and PSRAM=opi — OPI flash settings give a black screen and cache fault.
From the README
From the README
- Display
- ST7789 240×320 SPI TFT (Landscape 320×240) @ 80MHz SPI
- Performance
- reducing 2,000-ROM enumeration from ~3.5s to < 15ms
- Build
- Arduino IDE with ESP32 board support (Core v3.3.11).
- Limit
- Setting FlashMode to OPI will cause a black screen / flash cache fault.
